The urgency surrounding identity in the cloud may be overstated, but the technology has strategic significance. Extending identity-based controls to cloud resources and SaaS follows a pattern consistent with the IAM evolution, but infrastructure and application delivery models require identity to take on new forms. Identity in the cloud faces a ‘unity vs. plurality’ issue: Identity must live at the point of control, and it must be contingent on a single authoritative source or a trust broker for its validity. Federated SSO & unified access control are required to tackle operational issues presented by migrating resources and apps to the cloud
