Our Story
Symplified's founders were instrumental in the formation of the Identity Management market. Their first company, Securant Technologies and its ClearTrust product, now are RSA’s flagship Web access management platform. At Securant, we worked with hundreds of enterprise deployments, experiencing firsthand the identity challenges that faced the Fortune 1000 during the Web 1.0 go-go days in the '90s.
First-generation identity companies understandably focused on big Fortune 500 infrastructure software architectures. They got rich off the backs of their customers - developing and selling huge, expensive, over-featured platforms. Times were good, companies spent millions for mega 'infrastructure' initiatives that drove feature creep and stifled innovation.
After Securant's acquisition by RSA in 2001, we stepped back and watched the identity market evolve. We saw the first-generation enterprise identity companies consistently ignoring an entire market segment. Thousands of midmarket enterprises needed identity management, but complexity and cost conspired against them, limiting identity management to only the largest enterprises.
SaaS Changed The Game
In the early 2000's, Software as a Service established itself as a better way to deliver business value with an On Demand model. SaaS broke the painful cycle of buying expensive software suites with bloated feature sets and unrealized promises, coupled with uncertain and risky outcomes. Companies like Salesforce.com, Taleo, Postini, Qualys, WebEx and Netsuite experienced meteoric growth. With growth came growing pains and companies found that SaaS alone wasn't a silver bullet.
SaaS was a game changer in CRM, ERP, collaboration, email and network security because it solved the cost and complexity problems that dogged many enterprise software deployments. One of the most expensive and complex IT problems – identity management – remained to be addressed.
The lack of an identity management capability for SaaS had two implications. The first was the lack of a purpose-built SaaS identity solution to solve the unique authentication, access and authorization problems encountered when deploying SaaS apps. The second ramification was the continued focus of identity solutions as an expensive enterprise infrastructure for the enterprise market. This continues to keep the benefits of identity management beyond the reach of most midmarket companies.
Complexity Seemed Inevitable
With our enterprise background, we at Symplified knew the complexities of identity management first-hand. Identity management involves a lot of moving parts which is why historically, management systems were themselves complex. The first-generation identity approach requires tremendous expertise in identity, security, middleware, databases, directories, web/app servers, backed by a team of administrators, developers, integrators, auditors - just to get the foundations in place.
Factor in deployment and integration efforts and these massive first-generation identity projects often took years to get up and working. Compounding the problem is the constant change and upgrade cycles. It wasn’t uncommon for a modest deployment of several thousand identities to cost many hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Don't get us wrong. We're huge fans of identity management - we just think there's a much better and simpler way to do it.
And so we started Symplified.
We made Symplified our namesake to remind us that everything we do should be as simple as possible for our customers. We thrive making really complicated things simple. They just work.
